History

BB was introduced to Malaya in 1946 by a British soldier, Mr Robert Davis. Together with Mr Geh Hun Kheng, an educationalist, they came together to establish the 1st Penang Company. The Company was sponsored by Madras Lane Methodist Church.

From Penang, the BB began to spread to other parts of Malaya beginning from major cities and subsequently smaller towns in rural areas of Peninsular Malaya.

The Federation of Malayan Council of The Boys’ Brigade was established in August 1957 when Malaya gained her independence. The BB was honoured when it was invited to participate in the Independent Day Parade.

After 43 years of existence, the National office was set up in 1989 when the first full-time staff was employed to coordinate the ever increasing work of the Brigade in the country.

 

Present

Today the National office has its own property near the capital city of Kuala Lumpur and staffed by four (4) full time paid personnel.

As of 2012, there are108 Companies with a membership of8,264boys and girls.Every week there are791 active adult volunteersserve as leaders and friends to the Boys and Girls. The membership is organized into four (4) age group sections namely the Pre Junior Section (6-8 years), the Junior Section (9-12 years), the Senior Section (12-19 years) and the Primer Section (16-21 years).

The Boys’ Brigade is also widely accepted by all Christian denominations ranging from the main line denominations such as the Methodist, Anglican, Lutheran, Baptist to the Pentecostal and the independent churches. The Boys’ Brigade has a strong presence in both the government and private schools.

 

Special Highlights& Achievements

The Boys’ Brigade in Malaysia is recognized by the various Malaysian government agencies like the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development. It is also a member of the National Malaysia Youth Council, an umbrella body that unites all the youth organizations in the country. The Boys’ Brigade in Malaysia is also a member of the National Council of Churches of Malaysia and the National Evangelical Christian Fellowship.

Platoon color

The major national program of The Boys’ Brigade in Malaysia is the 6-days National Camp or the “Pesta” (means Festival). The “Pesta” is held biennially and is a major event that every member would make an attempt to participate at least once in their life time. Among the showcase events are the National Brass Band Competition, National Footdrill Competition and the National Group Singing Competition. To keep up with the interest of the youths today, the National Street / Hip Hop Dancing Competition was included at the recent “Pesta” in 2010. The popularity of the “Pesta” has also attracted many international participants over the years.

BBM also have a few years of meaning and successful partnership with the Malaysia National Kidney Foundation and Malaysia Aids Council in promoting awareness among youths in the BB and the public about kidney and HIV disease and prevention.

 

Future

Building Fund
BB Malaysia is planning to move its National Headquarters to a bigger premise within the next few years to accommodate more staff and equipment.

Campsite
BB Malaysia is also hoping to run its own campsite for the benefit of its members and other youth or church groups.

Community Work
Enhancing the BB’s image and recognition in the society by partnering with government agencies and NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) in community projects initiative.

Extension
Open up more BB Companies in schools and churches throughout the country.

About Us

On 7 May 2002 , at the East Asia Regional Fellowship meeting held in Bangkok , Thailand , the idea of BB Asia was first mooted and a Pro-tem Committee formed under the chairmanship of Mr Michael Moorthy, the Brigade President of BB Malaysia. The paper entitled 'Extending The Boys' Brigade', proposing the new international confederation came from Mr Lim K Tham of BB Singapore.

BB Asia was officially inaugurated on 26 July 2003 in Johor Baru when BB representatives from Hong Kong , Indonesia , Malaysia , Singapore and Thailand signed a memorandum of agreement giving birth to the regional association.
